WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH in East London

Contemporary women artists, activists, writers and performers, women’s groups and organisations present a diverse programme of events and exhibitions celebrating women in galleries, venues, libraries and institutions across East London. Art exhibitions to note include the Women’s History Month Photo Show by women photographers at the Brady Arts Centre, Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1945-1965 foregrounding the work of women artists such as Gillian Ayres, Jean Cooke and Eva Frankfurther, Photographing Protest: Resilience through a feminist lens at Four Corners showcases the work of photographers who have used their cameras to support political struggles. Croation artist Vlatka Horvat has her first solo show in London at Peer, Constructing Futures – photography from Ghana taken by women entering the construction industry is exhibited at Photovoice, Indian photographers Poulomi Basu and Sutapa Biswas are showing at Autograph, and at the Whitechapel Gallery their new exhibition A Century of the Artist’s Studio includes Louise Bourgeois, Barbara Hepworth and Tracey Emin.

Performances are contributed by Holm Theatre at the Half Moon Theatre with a production of ‘Josephine’ about the inspirational Josephine Baker, ‘Arab Women Artists Now Festival’ at the Rich Mix, ‘666 Comments’ with Alike Chapple and Little Mighty at Poplar Union, Voices at the Ridley Road Market Bar,and Unfinished Histories present ‘Her Inside: Stepping Out’ an online reading of plays ,poetry and prose of reflections of historical and recent confinement.

Events include the Lady Lane Market & Kitchen at Canvas Café, a programme of sociable activities by the East End Women’s MuseumThe London Walk for homeless women, Hackney Howlers Book Launch, the Women in Focus Festival at Poplar Union, a Family Fun Weekend at the Cutty Sark exploring the histories and myths of women at sea, The People Speak Talkaoke, and the Women’s Voices Now Film Festival.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH is co-ordinated by Alternative Arts and supported by Tower Hamlets Council and all the many artists and venues participating.
