FAIR GAME – SAVE THE FUTURE OF FOOTBALL

How Football can help Refugees – Online Conference
Tues 8 March – International Women’s Day
On Tuesday Fair Game is hosting an amazing conference to celebrate International Women’s Day, with the crisis unfolding in Ukraine some of our sessions couldn’t be more relevant.
Our keynote speaker is Farkhunda Muhtaj, the captain of the Afghanistan Women’s team. When the Taliban invaded she was a key part of Soccer Balls a group that rescued the Afghan girls football team.
Then later we have a panel from Amnesty where three women – a Lebanese international, an Ethiopian international and a Kenyan who went on to play for Spurs – tell their story of how they fled their countries and were welcomed by the football community in England.
There is also a panel event involving Jacqui Oatley and BBC South presenter Anjana Gadgil.
The event also includes sessions on tackling sexism on the terraces, women in the boardroom, being an ally, and increasing female participation in football.
The conference is a virtual event. Dip-in and dip-out. All sessions are recorded & available for delegates to listen back

Four Corners : Photographing Protest Photo © Sally Fraser 1971
PHOTOGRAPHING PROTEST: Resistance through a feminist lens
18 March – 29 April FREE
This exhibition explores protest as captured from a feminist lens. It showcases the work of photographers, from across generations, who have used their cameras to support political struggles and social movements in Britain, from 1968 to the present day. Photographing Protest reveals how images of resistance resonate across generations. The exhibition opens with rarely seen images by activist photographer Sally Fraser, who captured defining social movements of the 1968 era, from the Hornsey Art College student sit-ins to the fiery beginnings of the Women’s Liberation movement. Social protests of the 1980s and 90s are shown through the prolific work of Format, the all-women photo agency: at the Greenham Common women’s peace camp, on the Miners’ strike front line, at Reclaim the Night marches and more. Alongside, the exhibition explores a new generation of photographers engaging with contemporary struggles: anti-racism, LGBTQ+ community rights and climate justice among others, to ask how feminist protest photography can be an agent for today’s political change.

The Egg, Wales Millenium Centre and Oxford Playhouse present Holm Theatre’s Josephine.
Josephine Baker, the little girl from Missouri who became an original 20th Century icon. Dancer, actor, activist, campaigner, spy and mother to the Multicultural Rainbow Tribe, Josephine broke the mould and high kicked the pieces to the kerb. But almost 50 years after her death Café Josephine, a down-at-heel New York diner dedicated to her memory, faces closure. Nobody remembers Josephine, who she was, what she did, what she stood for. And she just can’t allow that. With a sultry Harlem Renaissance-inspired score, Charleston dancing and a hatful of historic figures, Josephine blurs the real with the imagined as we follow one woman’s incredible journey.

CONSTRUCTING FUTURES
Participatory photography from Ghana taken by women entering the construction industry.
1-25 March Mon-Fri 10.30am-5pm FREE
In Ghana, perceptions about construction can deter people from entering this sector. It is viewed as ‘unskilled work’ or ‘men’s work’. Women make up less than 3% of employees in the construction industry. Negative stereotypes associated with female construction workers may prevent women from becoming what can be a beneficial employment opportunity.
In 2017, Photovoice and the Overseas Development Institute delivered a participatory photography programme with women who had entered the construction industry. The photographs and digital stories taken by the young people themselves explore the opportunities the sector offers and brings to light some of the stereotypes and challenges they overcame to enter the sector.

The Women’s Library collection
The Women’s Library collection tells the story of the campaign for women’s rights and women’s equality from the beginnings of the suffrage movement to the present day. The collection includes UNESCO-recognised documents, rare books, and objects such as original suffrage banners. The majority of the material dates from the late 19th century to the present day and the focus is mainly UK.
Over the last year we have been increasing our digital profile with a series of videos made for the Out of the Box: Stories from LSE Archives on YouTube, including many from the Women’s Library. These include talks with academics introducing aspects of women’s history, such as Natalya Vince on ‘Colonial Entanglements’, as well as live events such as Sheila Rowbotham in conversation with Sally Alexander on her new memoir of the 1970s. Our Women’s Library playlist gathers together podcasts and past events too. We have also just digitized some of our Women’s Library poster collection from the 1970s and 80s.

If gender theory sees gender as an act we learn to perform throughout our lives, the precarious choreography it involves presents a rich subject for photography to explore. International students from the 2nd Year BA Photography Course investigate perspectives on how women are seen or see themselves, how we relate to women in our lives, society and the diverse cultures from which they come.

For her first solo show in London, Vlatka Horvat presents a series of 365 A4 works on paper. Each is based on a photograph the artist has taken on her daily walk, which she then playfully and radically reimagines using drawing and collage. Her work investigates the precarious relationship between bodies, objects, the built environment, and nature by redrawing and reimagining the physical, social and environmental boundaries experienced in our everyday lives.
