THFN 75th Anniversary – 75 Years of Tower Hamlets Friends and Neighbours

A Social Documentary Photographic Exhibition / The Gallery Cafe, St. Margaret’s House, 21 Old Ford Rd, E2 9PL

About the Exhibition

This 15 prints photographic exhibition at the Gallery Cafe is a celebration of the charity, its staff, volunteers, clients, and 75 years of memories and meaning documented through photography.

THFN is a registered charity operating from St Margaret’s buildings in Bethnal Green with a small dedicated staff team and over 30 volunteers.  THFN directly supports over 250 older people each year that experience loneliness and social isolation through befriending and advocacy. Their core activity is visiting them at home, organising outings and other events.

More recently, THFN has been supporting their clients through distance befriending, primarily via the telephone. Indirect beneficiaries include family and friends of those they support which puts the number of real beneficiaries in the region of 350 people.  More than that though, the support given is not available from any other voluntary or statutory body in the borough and the need for that support is self-evident and recognised by the local health and social services from whom they receive over 90% of our referrals. Last year over 90% of the people referred to them were experiencing depression and over 30% diagnosed with dementia, a figure they have seen steadily rise over the years.

This photographic exhibition opens at the Gallery Cafe on the 16th May 2022 before touring the borough of Tower Hamlets.
