The launch of the 14th anniversary of Somali Week Festival brings together a diverse collection of Somali creatives to explore the relationships between modern and traditional art forms.

This year the festival is opened by The Honourable Suldaan Said Ahmed, a Member of Finnish Parliament and the country’s Special Representative on Peace Mediation in the Horn of Africa.

Professor Siciid Salah will contribute reflections on the theme of the intersection of tradition and modernity.

A panel conversation, chaired by educator and presenter Baar Hersi, and featuring the director of the first Somali Oscar-nominated movie, The Gravedigger’s WifeKhadar Ayderus Ahmed; British music producer and Columbia A&R manager Muna Ruumi;  Fadumo Ali, founder and CEO of Finnish healthcare company Hoiwa Oy, and author and translator Abdiaziz Guudcadde, consider the diversity of Somali creativity and how artists inspire and influence each other.

The evening concludes with live music from Ikran Jama and traditional Somali dance group Qoraan.

The Somali Week Festival runs from Friday 21 October – Sunday 30 October. The theme for this year’s festival explores the intersection of tradition and modernity within the art forms. Over the festival, expect book launches, poetry recitals, film screenings, children’s day, music and much more!

SWF 2022 caters to the wider UK audience with events in Somali and English and creates points of access for Somalis, and a growing number of non-Somalis, to engage with Somali music, arts and literature.

Kayd Somali Arts and Culture co-ordinates regular artistic and cultural events in the UK including Somali Week Festival. It aims to contribute to the appreciation of the rich Somali culture and its diversity through art, literature, poetry, music, theatre and debates and discussions.
