Asian Roots in Redbridge: An Exhibition

Asian Roots in Redbridge: An Exhibition

Until Saturday 10 September / Redbridge Central Library (1st Floor), Clements Road, Ilford, IG1 1EA

This exhibition explores the history of South Asian life in Redbridge through a rich mix of historic objects, personal family photographs, and oral histories.

Around 50% of the LB of Redbridge’s population is from a South Asian background, making it one of the largest and most diverse South Asian communities in the UK. Beginning with early pioneers 100 years ago (including Britain’s first female Indian doctor) the exhibition explores people moving from London’s East End in the 1960s, the arrival of East African Asians in the 1970s, the creation of community facilities in the 1980s such as the vibrant shopping district of Ilford Lane, to today’s communities from every part of South Asia. This exhibition, created by Redbridge Museum and local residents, celebrates their stories of migration and local life.
