Emergencies

Helping Tower Hamlets communities prepare, respond and recover.

The Community Resilience Project

The Community Resilience Project was funded through the London Resilience Unit’s Community Resilience Programme to strengthen local preparedness and ensure London remains ready for future challenges. Delivered in partnership by Tower Hamlets CVS, the Equalities Hub networks, Hackney CVS and the Volunteer Centre Tower Hamlets, the project mapped local networks, identified gaps in existing approaches, and made recommendations to ensure that the needs of residents, especially those with protected characteristics, are fully recognised in emergency planning and response.

Emergencies do not affect everyone equally.

The impact of floods, fires, pandemics or local incidents is shaped by people’s circumstances, resources and identities, with some groups less prepared or more at risk. In Tower Hamlets – Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) organisations, play a vital role because they are trusted by residents and have a deep understanding of their communities’ needs.

Tower Hamlets Borough Resilience Forum

The Tower Hamlets Borough Resilience Forum (BRF) is the partnership that brings together the council, emergency services, health partners and other statutory partners to plan for and respond to major emergencies in Tower Hamlets.

Through the Community Resilience Project, Tower Hamlets CVS, the Equalities Hub networks, Hackney CVS and the Volunteer Centre Tower Hamlets have strengthened links between voluntary and community organisations and the BRF. This helps ensure that community needs and lived experiences are better understood when planning for emergencies and that communities are consulted before the event of an emergency.
