Save the date. The annual Boishakhi Mela festival returns this summer, giving residents and visitors a chance to enjoy some of the best local, national and international Bengali arts, music and culture.
Free for everyone to attend, the mela will be back in Weavers Fields, Bethnal Green, on Sunday 30 June with a main stage programme, extensive arts and family area and the mela market place.
Last year’s festival attracted around 40,000 revellers across the day from the borough and beyond.
It will be launched with a spectacular parade following the theme Rivers of Bangladesh which leaves Buxton Street at 11am before processing through Banglatown to arrive at Weavers Fields for 12noon to officially open the event. Don’t miss DJ Turtle along with an array of other amazing floats.
International pop sensation, Imran, will make his debut UK performance at the Mela with his band. As a composer and versatile singer, Imran’s songs have featured in hit films such as Samraat, the King Is Here and Anupam. Lovely Deb, the hugely popular folk singer from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh, will make her first UK visit since 2004 at the event, which last year attracted around 40,000 revellers. Popular folk singer and emerging star Belly Afroz will also join main stage performers. And internationally acclaimed Naz and Bolly Flex are back to showcase their dynamic dance moves inspired by classic Bollywood styles with a contemporary twist.
Away from the main stage there will be great food, an extensive family area with games, arts workshops and acoustic performances, a funfair and more. This promises to be a great day out for the whole family.
