SUMMARY:Centring life course exposure to racism as the root cause of ethnic
inequalities in health in later life
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 23 November / 3.30 to 4.30pm / On Zoom\n\nThis is a j
ointly hosted seminar between the ESRC Centre for Society and Mental Healt
h and the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine.\n\nAbout the s
eminar:Ethnic inequalities in health are entrenched and persistent in the
UK. This seminar\, hosted by Professor Laia Bécares\, explores the role
of racism\, experienced over the life course\, in structuring ethnic ineq
ualities in health in later life. Anchored around key tenets of life cours
e theory\, Professor Bécares will present findings from recent and upcomi
ng publications that centre racism as the root cause of ethnic inequalitie
s\, exploring mechanisms that patterns stark ethnic inequities in later li
fe.\n\nAbout the speaker:Laia is Professor of Social Science and Health in
the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine\, King’s College Lo
ndon. Her research interests are in studying the pathways by which the dis
crimination and marginalisation of people and places lead to social and he
alth inequalities across the life course\, with a specific focus on racism
and heteronormativity as systems of oppression.\n\nBOOK YOUR PLACE\n\n
